Blue Gold Foods: Select Tilapia

Chay Chak Tilapia is a member of the Cichlid family and is native to Africa. The Economist magazine in a cover-story article about aquaculture in its August 9, 2003 edition, said Tilapia “could become the chicken of the sea.” In comparison to other fish that could be raised commercially Tilapia has many advantages:
It is a mild, soft, white fish that grows well in controlled conditions.
Tilapia is a hardy, disease-resistant, rapidly growing fish that tolerates
various water conditions and reproduces easily.
Chefs like it because it absorbs other flavors such as garlic, cilantro, lemon, orange, oyster essence, etc.
Tilapia is a very high quality fish that can be raised and sold at lower prices than most other fish of equal quality and taste. This is why demand continues to grow and prices remain stable for Tilapia.

Blue Gold Select Tilapia
All tilapia fillets in the size range of 5-7 and 7-9 oz are derived from fish raised to 800 grams and higher. These are likely to be all male populations (females rarely reach this size). The most common way to raise all male population is by sex reversing females into males during the first 20 days of larval development. Although this method is not prohibited by the FDA, and no harm was ever recorded by it, certain consumer segments and major buyers (such a Whole Foods, and Wild Oats) avoid use of hormonally treated fish.

Our select Tilapia strain, which will be raised in this proposed project, yields 100% male progeny without hormonal treatment.
